Cham Kate Festival To Be Celebrated

The Brahman Cham community in Ninh Thuan Province will celebrate its annual Kate festival on September 27 (the first day of the seventh month in the Cham calendar).

Kate, one of the most significant Cham festivals, is held annually to commemorate their gods, heroes and ancestors.

The three-day festival will feature ritual offerings, a palanquin procession, folk songs and dances, as well as performances on Paranung drums and Saranai panpipes, two traditional Cham musical instruments.

A Trade, Tourism and Craft Villages Fair opened today as part of the festival. Nearly 300 booths at the fair display products from local enterprises and traditional craft villages as well as other specialties of the province. The week-long event will also include seminars on business and trade promotion with the aim of attracting more enterprises, investors and visitors to the locality.

Ninh Thuan Province is home to nearly 68,000 Cham people, who earn their living mainly by farming, brocade weaving and running small businesses. They make up 11.3% of the province's population, and 41,000 are followers of the Brahman religion.
